-Chakra Meditation
Chakra meditation is a form of meditation that consists of a set of relaxation techniques focused on bringing balance, relaxation and well-being to the chakras. “Chakra” is an ancient Sanskrit word that means vortex or wheel that can be traced back to India.
Chakras are the human body’s seven main energy centers with each one corresponding to individual glands that govern our specific body parts plus various areas of the psyche. They are located next to a hormonal gland along the human spinal column.
Chakras can become blocked and if even one of the 7 Chakras becomes blocked, it sets us up for physical and emotional problems which is something no one wants.
Practised regularly, asanas can benefit every aspect of our lives from physical well-being to our mental well-being.A typical open level class includes pranayama (breathing exercises), warm-ups includingsuryanamaskar. The asanas follow an exact order that allows for the systematic movement of every major part of the body in a balanced way that enhances prana or life force energy, keeping the mind quiet and without the need to think beyond each individual pose.Prior to everything, asana is spoken of as the first part of hatha yoga. Having done asana, one attains steadiness of body and mind, freedom from disease and lightness of the limbs. Hatha YogaPradipika.

Therapeutic Yoga is a particularly effective practice for those recovering from, or living with, injury or illness. Therapeutic Yoga combines restorative yoga (supported postures), gentle yoga, breathwork, hands-on healing, and guided meditation techniques in such a way that it is an excellent choice for those who need something gentle yet effective for bringing the body into balance and reducing stress.
Therapeutic Yoga is a deeply meditative experience – it provides the opportunity to step away from the busy-ness of the outside world and access the deeper wisdom that resides within us.
The Therapeutic Yoga Program:
When I teach Therapeutic Yoga at The Expanding Light, the first thing I want everyone to learn is how to do no harm. Prevention is the best medicine in yoga, too! Then I like to arm the students with knowledge of anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, alignment, sports medicine, injury first aid and terminology.
Then we cover therapeutic asanas: when to use certain ones, and when to avoid others. Next we go a little deeper and cover the connection between the asanas, physical and mental imbalances and the subtle energy of the chakras. I also like to emphasize the importance of the affirmations — whether you are working with students on a spiritual, psychological or “purely” physical level. I try to demonstrate how a personal practice of meditation and prayer can be of great assistance. So I like to define “therapeutic yoga” as applying the techniques of yoga to alleviate specific problems (physical, mental and/or spiritual) coupled with a combination of knowledge (specific to the problem), experience and intuition. Happily, most students find that using yoga as a therapeutic tool has very positive side effects, as their whole being comes into a healthier state of balance.

Iyengar Yoga is a purist style of yoga developed by and named after B.K.S Iyengar in the 1960s. Iyengar Yoga is a very meticulous style of yoga, placing the emphasis on precision and alignment. The practice is all about the details of your breath control (pranayama) and posture (asana) and is excellent for building strength and flexibility. Iyengar yoga is great for learning the subtleties of correct alignment for all ages and abilities.
An Iyengar studio will always stock a wide array of yoga props — blocks, blankets, straps, chairs and bolsters – in order to help each student find the proper alignment in a pose. Props help students hold poses in alignment even when they’re new to them, have a chronic condition, are injured or simply stiff.
What makes Iyengar yoga different?:
Iyengar yoga is for anyone and everyone. It’s the world’s most widely practised method of yoga. Iyengar yoga teachers are well qualified and experienced in helping each student to find their own level in each pose. Props are useful here to make each pose accessible to all.
Because Iyengar yoga focuses on postural alignment, you may discover that it is particular good for postural and structural problems. And the fact that you have to give all of your attention to the precise details of each pose requires effort and concentration which can relieve stress and anxiety. Iyengar yoga is all about quality of movement rather than quantity, to encourage safety throughout your practice.
